While Zac Efron is grateful for the doors that High School Musical has opened for him, he seems anxious to break away from his character, Troy Bolton, and try his hand at other projects. He has already played heartthrob Link Larkin in the big screen version of Hairspray and has several other movies on the way. He will star in Seventeen Again, playing a young version of Matthew Perry. Later in the year, he will appear in Me and Orson Welles, as part of a star studded cast. Rumor has it that Efron could next be seen playing gay twins in an upcoming movie.
Page Six has reported that that Factory Boys, a famous New York magazine article about twin brothers, Richard and Robert Dupont, is being made into a film. It will be directed by Steven Klein and tells the story of Andy Warhol’s relationship with the brothers. Warhol is most famous for his involvement in the Pop Art movement but was also a filmmaker, record producer, author, and public figure. The brothers have said publicly that they would like to see Zac Efron play them in the movie.
Granted, right now, it’s all talk and there have been no official meetings. There will probably be scores of High School Musical fans who would be shocked if Efron takes a turn playing gay twins. However, it’s almost certain that Efron is looking to gain some recognition from the critics, something he won’t get playing Troy Bolton or doing movies such as Seventeen Again. The only way to truly break the teen idol mold is to boldly play against it and take on a meaty or dark role. If he agrees to do Factory Boys, he could put himself in a league with actors such as Jake Gyllenhaal, Joaquin Phoenix, and Leonardo DiCaprio.
